Please join the Charleston Gaillard Education and Community Program in partnership with Charleston Jazz Academy for an exciting one-week opportunity with Grammy Award-winning artist and local jazz legend, Charlton Singleton. Spend a week immersed in jazz culture and jazz music with eight esteemed jazz educators. Improve your technique and challenge yourself with the incorporation of jazz music into your repertoire. On Friday, June 30, friends and family are invited to attend the final Big Band performance at the Charleston Gaillard Center. Camp will be held in the second floor Salons at the Charleston Gaillard Center, 95 Calhoun St, Charleston, SC 29401.
For each camp, we will accept 17 Middle School and 17 High School students. In order to apply, students must have 2 years experience and a letter of recommendation from a Band Director or Music Teacher.
Applications will be time stamped once the application and the letter of recommendation are both received via the application form.
For each camp, we will accept:
- Five Saxophones
- Four Trumpets
- Four Trombones
- One Guitar
- One Piano
- One Bass
- One Drummer
DAILY SCHEDULE
9am to 10:30am FULL BAND REHEARSAL
Practice material as a group - includes playing as a section, soloing, tightening music for the final concert
10:30am - Noon THEORY
Group Sessions - Groups based on skill level, with focus on improving foundations of music theory
Noon - 12:30pm LUNCH
outside on the Gaillard Center lawn
12:30pm - 1:30pm SECTIONALS
Break into individual groups with instruction in saxophone, trumpets, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, and drums.
1:30pm - 2:30pm JAZZ HISTORY
Introduction to different periods of jazz, major musicians during each time period, and LISTEN to music from each period.
2:30pm - 4pm FULL BAND REHEARSAL
Practice material as a group - includes playing as a section, soloing, tightening music for the final concert. GOING HOME ON A HIGH NOTE!
3pm Friday, June 30 - FINAL PERFORMANCE
Friends and family are invited to attend the Big Band performance in the Martha and John M. Rivers Performance Hall at the Charleston Gaillard Center.
