Founded in 2010, the Gaillard Performance Hall Foundation was established with the general purpose of improving the nonprofit and public performing arts venues, theaters, and halls in and around Charleston, South Carolina; and to aid, support, promote, develop, maintain, and manage educational programs and performances focused on the arts. In partnership with the City of Charleston, the Foundation’s first effort was to help secure half the funding of the $142-million re-construction of the Charleston Gaillard Center and its world-class Martha & John M. Rivers Performance Hall. In October of 2015, the Grand Opening Gala and Inaugural Concert celebrated the momentous campaign effort, thanks to the generosity of the Charleston community with support following from across the region and the nation.
In 2016, the Foundation created a permanent endowment in order to protect the community’s investment in the facility, and to support and promote the Charleston Gaillard Center: specifically the Martha & John M. Rivers Performance Hall, its resident arts organizations, and the educational and community outreach programs made possible by its existence.
Today the Foundation serves donors who share our vision to ensure the performing arts continue to thrive in the Lowcountry. As the Foundation sharpens its focus on supporting the Gaillard Center’s highly successful educational programming initiatives, especially those that bring students into the Martha and John M. Rivers Performance Hall, its donors also support artistic and cultural programming at the Center. The Foundation offers the community opportunities to invest charitable dollars to support programming at the Gaillard Center through gifts to the annual fund for programming needs today, as well as to its endowment for future programming needs. Honoring major gifts in support of these and other initiatives, the Foundation is pleased to offer naming recognition of an array of beautiful assets throughout the Center. Finally, the Foundation partners with donors and their professional advisors who wish to benefit the Foundation through their estate plan.
The Foundation engages with stakeholders to develop a strong culture of philanthropy to help support and sustain the Gaillard Center as an integral community asset and touchstone. In supporting the Center’s educational and artistic programming, its superb resident organizations, and the longevity of an iconic 200-year neo-classical building, the community will be the benefactors and beneficiaries of exciting and thriving performing arts in Charleston.
