In Nutcracker Suite, explosive tap dance meets your favorite holiday classic. This Nutcracker boogies, slides, struts, and dives into Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s intoxicating interpretation of the Tchaikovsky classic. Acclaimed choreographer and MacArthur Fellow Michelle Dorrance, along with collaborators Hannah Heller and Josette Wiggan, transform the Gaillard Center stage into a celebration of swingin’ syncopation, persuading us all to be a little more soulful this holiday season.

A recent rehearsal at Gibney studios in Manhattan was remarkable for several reasons, not least of which was the sense of inclusiveness and, well, joy in the room. It was filled with dancers of all types, body shapes and races. Their diversity was also reflected in their dancing; though all were obviously good tappers, each had his or her own way of moving— looser or more streamlined, lower to the ground or lighter on the feet. Chorus line-like uniformity was clearly not the goal. And yet somehow they became a coherent whole, at one with the music.”

The Charleston Gaillard Center’s Education & Community Program is pleased to announce student and teacher tickets are available for this performance. Limited availability. Limited to two tickets per person with valid student/teacher ID.
Tickets available in advance: Tickets are $20 (plus applicable fees) for Orange seats on seatmap. Ticket purchasers must pick up their tickets at Will Call the night of the performance.
Day of Rush: Tickets are $25 (plus applicable fees). Available two hours prior to show time, best available.
