About the Show
The Colour of Music Festival Orchestra ushering in Black History month in a special events performance highlighting Charleston’s “father of Black contributions” to classical music, Edmund Thornton Jenkins. Never heard before compositions include Mr. Jenkins’ Negro Symphony, A Prayer, his Clarinet Concerto and a South Carolina premiere of his original composition Charlestonia: A Folk Rhapsody. The evening will conclude with George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
“The Festival, which presents solo recitals, chamber music programs and large-scale concerts, is a showcase of Black talent meant to shake up a classical music world that’s a little too set in its ways and to raise awareness among audiences.”
